Kebbi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 478 jerrycans of 25 liters each (11,950 liters) of petroleum motor spirit (PMS) being smuggled out of the country through Yauri waterway.

The anti-bunkering team of the command made the seizure, according to a statement on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Nasiru Manga.

“The intelligence operatives had monitored the movement of loaded jerrycans of PMS to a spot near the water way for some days before the deployment of the anti-bunkering squad, who struck and intercepted the 11,950 litres of PMS and evacuated the product to the Command’s Headquarters in Birnin Kebbi,” Manga stated.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Kebbi Area Command, Joseph Attah, while commenting, said there was need for security agencies to share information, work together for national interest.

“Together we are stronger,” Attah said.

According to him, the command remained committed to monitoring the waterways under its jurisdiction, especially at this time of the raining season, against smugglers of PMS, rice, second hand clothes and other items that could compromise national security.

He called on the border communities to work along with the command for relevant information that could help curtail smuggling activities in the state.

The command had in recent weeks renewed offensive on smugglers, making a number of seizures of PMS, second hand clothes, used vehicle, foreign fertilizers among others.
