With $14.2bn Worth, Dangote Overtakes Johann Rupert As Africa’s Richest Man
With a $14.2 billion net worth, Aliko Dangote has overtaken South Africa’s Johann Rupert as Africa’s Richest Man, making him the continent’s wealthiest for 12 years, according to Forbes 2023 Index.
Last June, Forbes Magazine ranked Johann Rupert as Africa’s richest man with a net worth of $12 billion. But from the latest ranking, the net worth of Rupert who deals in luxury goods has slipped to $11.1 billion.
In a statement on Tuesday titled ‘Forbes 2023 Index: Dangote Still Africa’s Richest for 12th consecutive year,’ Forbes stated that Dangote, whose Dangote Cement Plc, is the largest producer of cement in Africa, is the only Nigerian in the list of first 200 richest men in the world with an estimated net worth of $14.2bn, up from last year’s $12.1 billion.
The statement said, “Forbes, in its latest ranking of world billionaires for 2023 reported that falling stocks, wounded unicorns, and rising interest rates translated into a down year for the world’s wealthiest people.
“Dangote, presently ranked 124th among the world’s richest billionaires, is the only Nigerian in the top 200 world billionaires and one of the two Africans within that bracket; with South Africa’s Johann Rupert, who deals in luxury goods ranked 157th with a net worth of $11.1bn.
“Africa’s richest man founded and chairs Dangote Cement, the continent’s largest cement producer. Dangote Cement has a production capacity of 51.6 million tonnes per year across ten countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with integrated factories in seven countries, a clinker grinding plant in Cameroon, and import and distribution facilities in Ghana and Sierra Leone.”
Only last month of June, Bloomberg also ranked Dangote as Africa’s richest man, despite a fluctuating Nigerian currency against the dollar, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Dangote’s wealth was then valued at an impressive $15.6 billion in daily top billionaire lists, placing him at the pinnacle of African billionaires on the Index.
Ellon Musk and Bernard Arnault have placed the first and second richest people in the world, with fortunes totaling $219 billion and $194 billion, respectively while Jeff Bezos came in third with $151 billion, followed by Microsoft CEO Bill Gates with $130 billion, and Larry Ellison in fifth with a net worth of $130 billion.
Dangote’s consistent ranking as Africa’s richest person reflects his successful business ventures and investments in a variety of sectors.
