Abandoned N22bn Sango-Abeokuta Road Reconstruction Worries Reps
The House of Representatives is worried that the N22 billion Sango-Abeokuta expressway reconstruction has been abandoned.
Consequently, the members of the House Committee on Works have been mandated to look into the abandonment and report back within four weeks on the contract awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria and Reynolds Construction Company Limited at the cost of N22 billion since 2018 with no tangible work done in the past six years.
Ibrahim Isiaka representing Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency brought up the matter and asked for the intervention of the members on the road that is now in a deplorable condition causing untold hardship to the users who spend about 5 to 7 hours in the daily gridlock.
The Sango-Abeokuta Expressway is the only link connecting Ogun State and Ikeja parts of Lagos Nigeria and as such must be made motorable at all times to encourage Trade, Commerce and Industrialization and its non-rehabilitation has resulted in loss of revenue and man-hours.
Section 1 of the Federal Highways Act mandates the Minister, Federal Ministry of Works to carry out reconstruction and maintenance of Federal Roads and he has been urged to ensure the reconstruction of the all-important road.
“The House is concerned that with the deep potholes and gully erosions ravaging the road caused by torrential rainfalls, it has not only become a death trap for commuters and residents of adjoining communities but also a breeding ground for robbery and other criminal activities,” he noted.
