Former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele has been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This followed his release on Thursday night from the Department of State Services’ custody four months after his arrest.
Mr Emefiele was picked up by EFCC operatives less than an hour after his release from the DSS headquarters in Abuja, a source told PUNCH.
“Yes, Emefiele is currently in our (EFCC) custody; he was arrested last night less than an hour after the DSS freed him,” the source said.
The anti-graft agency is investigating the embattled former CBN boss over alleged impropriety, a source alleged.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale could not be reached for comment, according to the newspaper.
On July 25, DSS arraigned Emefiele at a Federal High Court in Lagos on a two-count charge bordering on alleged illegal possession of firearms.
The Nigerian government withdrew the charges on August 17 and filed a 20-count charge against him over alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud.
The arraignment has been stalled twice.
Emefiele has also been alleged to have entered a plea bargain with the government, a claim the latter debunked.
