MTN Nigeria To Bar Numbers Without NIN March 29
MTN Nigeria Communications PLC said it will bar subscribers who have not submitted their National Identity Numbers (NINs) or verified their phone numbers by March 29, 2024.
Similarly, lines with less than five connections to an unverified NIN will be barred by 15 April 2024, warning that all affected subscribers must undergo verification, including biometrics and biodata before their lines can be unbarred.
The telecom said this is based on directives from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to implement full network barring on phone lines whose subscribers have not submitted their National Identity Numbers (NINs) are unverified.
This directive is part of a broader industry-wide effort, requiring compliance on or before specific deadlines.
According to the directive, phone lines without submitted NINs or those that have been submitted but remain unverified, the lines will be barred by 29 March 2024, or if five or more lines are linked to an unverified NIN.
This action follows a previous directive from the NCC in April 2022, requiring operators to restrict outgoing calls (one-way barring) for subscribers without associated NINs.
MTN Nigeria said it is currently engaging affected subscribers through various channels including enhancing the capacity of its service outlets to facilitate a smoother and more efficient process to encourage them to submit their NINs for verification.
MTN Nigeria expresses commitment to ensuring its subscribers comply with the NCC directive and is collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to expedite the NIN verification process.
The company acknowledges and appreciates the Federal Government’s efforts to implement a reliable and sustainable National Identity Management system, considering it a crucial enabler for national and economic development.
As a law-abiding corporate citizen and in adherence to its operating license requirements, MTN Nigeria pledges to comply with the industry-wide directive from the NCC as it promises to provide investors with further updates on progress and potential impacts with the release of its FY 2023 results.
MTN Nigeria urges all subscribers who have not linked their NINs to their lines to take immediate action by visiting the nearest MTN outlet or utilizing digital channels before the specified deadlines. Additionally, individuals without a NIN are encouraged to enrol at any of the NIMC’s enrollment centres nationwide.
