Tiwa Savage, the renowned Nigerian afrobeat singer, took to Instagram on January 10 2024, to share her excitement about her feature film debut, “Water and Garri.” The film is set to be exclusively released on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories later in the year. Savage expressed her gratitude for the fulfilling two-year journey as both the lead actor and executive producer.

Directed by Meji Alabi, the film revolves around Aisha (Savage), an ambitious fashion designer returning to her native home after a decade in the U.S. The storyline unfolds against the backdrop of heightened violence and tension, requiring Aisha to confront her past, scars, and guilt. Shot in Cape Coast, Ghana, the film promises gripping cinematography and storytelling.

Prime Video, recognizing the global demand for well-crafted contemporary African stories, eagerly anticipates the release. Ayanna Lonian, director of content acquisition at Prime Video, praised the stellar debut of both Alabi and Savage, emphasizing the fresh perspective Water and Garri bring to audiences worldwide.

The cast includes Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting, and Jemima Osunde. The film’s cultural significance and the cross-power of film and music are acknowledged by Jimi Adesanya, producer and Unbound Studios executive, who expressed excitement about collaborating with Prime Video.

Tiwa Savage, thrilled about the dream fulfilled, looks forward to unveiling a vulnerable side of herself through the film. The collaboration between Everything Savage, Unbound Studios, and JM Films, with executive producers including Vanessa Amadi-Ogbonna, reflects the synergy of talent in this cultural milestone. “Water and Garri” not only marks a significant achievement for Tiwa Savage but also adds a compelling African narrative to the global stage.
