Globacom Get 21-day Grace To Pay Interconnect Debt To MTNN
Globacom Nigeria has been given a 21-day grace to pay the interconnect debt owed to MTN Nigeria to save its subscribers from a phased disconnection from the network of the latter.
The grace period came following the intervention of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) which engaged the two telecom providers to resolve their outstanding issues.
By the end of the 21-day grace period, the two providers are expected to have reached a common ground in resolving the interconnect dispute between them.
The commission on 8th January published a Pre-Disconnection Notice informing subscribers of the approval to MTN Nigerian Communications Plc. (MTN) to commence a phased disconnection of Globacom Limited (Glo) with effect from January 18, 2024, owing to a long-standing interconnection debt dispute between the two telecom firms.
Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at NCC in a statement said the commission in approving, was deeply conscious of the potential impacts of the decision on consumers and therefore, continued to engage both parties to facilitate a resolution which prioritises and protects consumer interest and the seamless operation of the national telecoms network.”
The commission said that while it expects MTN and Glo to resolve all outstanding issues within 21 days, it maintains its original position that interconnect debts must be settled by all operating companies as a necessary component towards compliance with the regulatory obligations of all licensees.
“Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and other licensees in the telecom industry must keep to the terms and conditions of their licenses, especially as contained in their interconnection agreements,” Mouka concluded. statement.
