The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has said that it is set to shutdown the nation’s seaports in compliance with the nationwide strike notice issued by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) starting from Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th.
In a letter written to the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) signed by the Deputy Secretary General of MWUN, Comrade Oniha Erazua, the union sought for provision of adequate security in order to prevent the strike action from being hijacked by hoodlums.
The NLC under the leadership of its National President, Comrade Joe Ajaero had called for the two days nationwide protest as a result of hardships and insecurity being witnessed by Nigerians.
The letter by MWUN reads “I bring you fraternal greetings from the Central Working Committee (CWC) of our union – Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).
“I am directed to inform you that Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is in receipt of a Communique of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and being an affiliate of the NLC,
we SHALL COMPLY with the directive as contained in paragraph 3 in the copy of the NLC Communiqué herein attached.
“Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria therefore wishes to advise that security measures be put in place to prevent/forestall the perpetration of evil by hoodlums who might wish to hide under the cloak of our protest.”
