Reopening Of Border: Immigration Directs Personnel To Resume Duty

Following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration to reopen land and air borders with Nigeria’s neigbour, Niger Republic, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has directed all personnel deployed to the Nigeria-Niger border to resume work.

Nandap gave the directive in a statement signed by the Acting Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Kenneth Kure, on Thursday in Abuja.

Nigeria’s borders with Niger were shut in conformity with the decision of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as sanctions against the seizure of power by military juntas.

ECOWAS had imposed sanctions on the Niger Republic, including the closure of land and air borders, following the coup that ousted President Mahmed Bazoum, pressuring the coupist to restore power back for democracy.

However, on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu directed the opening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger. He also directed the lifting of other sanctions against the country with immediate effect.

Following the development, the CGI directed all Comptrollers stationed at States and Border Commands along the Nigeria-Niger Republic border to comply promptly and lift all restrictions on human movement.

The CGI assured that the service would continue to facilitate safe and orderly border crossings while upholding the integrity and security of Nigeria’s borders.
