A gang of hoodlums numbering about 30 have attacked the Neni Police Station and Anaocha local government headquarters in Anambra State.

The attack took place in the early hours of Thursday. It was gathered that the attackers were shouting “DPO must go; he has overstayed; he has been in Anaocha for over 15 years.”

While it was not clear why they also attacked the local government office very close to the station, the attackers were said to have alleged that Anaocha Police Station had become another SARS station, alleging that very bad things happen there.

Although the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the attack, he discredited reports that police officers were whisked away by the gangsters.

The PPRO said the hoodlums employed IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), insisting that they did not take away any arms, or whisked away any police personnel.

According to him, the hoodlums were successfully repelled by the superior fire-power of the police operatives who engaged them and forced them to flee.

He further said that police operations were still ongoing in the area smoothly.
