The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University branch, has issued a two-week ultimatum to the state government and institution’s management within which to tackle its demands.

According to a congress resolution in Gombe, which was signed by branch chairman, Dr Suleiman Jauro, and Dr M. Muhammad, the branch on Thursday said it wouldn’t hesitate to consider other legitimate options available to it.

The congress lamented the economic situation in the state, adding that it has an overwhelming effect on the well-being of members who are being owed.

The resolution partly read, “The congress of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of Gombe State University chapter, at its congress meeting, held today, March 28, 2024 deliberated extensively on issues affecting the well-being of her members.

“The congress frowned at the failure of the university administration to address the issues affecting the well-being of its members, which is currently affecting the morale of academic staff in the university.

“Morale of staff has been on the decline due to failure of the university to address the welfare issues of staff amidst the socio-economic challenges in the country.”

The congress frowned at the non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowance from 2015/2016 till 2023, the non-payment of arrears of 2020, 2021 and 2022 promotion, and other arrears,  noting that it would apply other measures to get its demands, should authorities not yield.

“The congress unanimously resolved to give the university a time frame of two weeks from today within which to address the above-listed issues. If these issues remain unaddressed at the expiration of the timeframe, the union will not hesitate to consider other legitimate options available to it to pursue its demand,” the union added.
