Mr. Adebayo Shittu, the Minister of Communications, has called on Nigerians and corporate organisations to be vigilant and to guard against cybercrime.

The minister made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Monday.

“We as the driver must ensure vigilance on the part of every Nigerian and every corporate organisation.

“We are also ensuring that there is a lot of publicity, public awareness about the dangers. Cybercrimes starts from your ATM.

“You must ensure that you put in place ways of preventing people from knowing your pin numbers and all of that, ensuring that people don’t have access to it.”

Shittu said that the National Assembly enacted a law on cybercrime in 2015, which required collaboration between the security forces and industry operators.

He noted that cybercrime was an international phenomenon and that Nigeria was leveraging on the advances of the international community to curb it.

He said that what the country needed was an efficient telephone system in the country.

Shittu also stressed the need for deliberate investment in rural areas to ensure the use of modern technology there and access to universal telecommunication services.

“What I believe is that we must continue to encourage broadband penetration and ensure that cables are laid all over the country, once that is done, I don’t think Nigerians will complain.

“Since more companies are coming on board in the telecom sector, there will necessarily be competition and competition will drive efficiency and bring about lower rates.

“I really don’t agree that land lines are cheaper, but what Nigeria needs is an efficient telephoning system.”

Shittu said that the country had a robust 150 million GSM services spread across the country despite the inefficiencies of the system. (NAN)
