Why Tolu, Ebenezer Obey’s Son Go Grey
By Daniji Emmanuel
Tolu Obey-Fabiyi is the only child that takes after his father, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi as a musician. The musician, who is also the current treasurer of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) told InsideBusiness Online how he was forced to go grey by impostors.
People know Tolu Obey by his grey afro, how did that come about?
When I started playing music, at that particular time, I had no album out and a lot of my journalistic friends now didn’t know who Tolu Obey was. So, then some of my colleagues who do Juju Music too started impersonating me as Tolu Obey. They would collect shows in my name when I am out of town and perform and get paid. There was a certain scenario where my father had already said I would represent him in a show and someone then told him that I would be performing in a show somewhere else on the same day. My father called me and said, “Tolu, what happened? Someone said you playing for me next week”. I told my dad it wasn’t possible as he had already said I was performing in his place on the same day. So after then, I decided to leave my hair and create the brand so that people would know me through my Afro hair.
