Electricity Workers Suspend Strike

The nationwide blackout in the country resulting from the industrial action of electricity workers which commenced yesterday may cease to be from today following the suspension of the strike order and the directive that workers should resume at their various duty posts.

 

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) agreed to call off the strike after a meeting that ended this morning between its officials and representatives of the federal government.

 

The Union in a statement by its secretary-general Comrade Joe Ajaero said the union, and the representatives of government this morning, reached agreement on all the issues in contention.

“Following the agreement reached between NUEE and representatives of Government this morning, on all the issues in contention, the Union wishes to suspend the industrial action it embarked upon to press home these demands”.

 

“Consequently, members are urged to return to their duty posts while we monitor the implementation of these agreements. We would not hesitate to resume action if the agreements are not implemented”.

 

The various Power Distribution companies had yesterday notified their customers of the industrial action by their workers which led ro a total blackout in the country.

 

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) in its notice to its customers states that “The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) yesterday 11th December 2019 commenced industrial action. Subsequently, the action has led to a nationwide shut down of electrical installations and has resulted in the disruption of services across our network”.

 

“We sincerely apologise for all inconveniences to our esteemed customers. Power will be restored immediately the strike is called off”.
