Airtel Partners Western Union on International Money Transfers

Airtel Africa Plc., a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, Wednesday disclosed that it has signed a strategic partnership with Western Union, an international money transfer service to facilitate international remittances.
In a notification statement signed by Airtel’s Company Secretary by Simon O’Hara, and filed to the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), today January 22, 2020, it stated that through the partnership with Western Union, Airtel Money customers will be able to reliably send and receive international money transfers using the Airtel Africa mobile money wallet on their phones.
Airtel Africa further said the partnership would pave the way for it to take an active part in the international money transfer business that happens to and from its operating countries.
“Through this partnership, Airtel customers in over 14 countries in the world can now reliably send and receive money on their phones using the Airtel Africa Mobile Money Wallet.”
“The partnership with Western Union will further cater for the needs of its local and global community customers to move money and enable international cross-border payments,” the statement explained.
While speaking on the milestone achievement, the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of Airtel Africa, Raghunath Mnadava said: “We are very excited to partner with Western Union to enable Airtel Money customers to access a world-leading money transfer organisations. International remittances into Africa are a lifeline to some of our customers. This partnership gives our customers the convenience of directly receiving and sending remittances from their Airtel mobile money wallets.
“They will now be automatically credited and debited via their Airtel Mobile Money Wallets on their phone and can immediately access the funds to pay bills or merchants or transfer funds to family and friends or convert to cash from the widespread Airtel Money agents, kiosks, and branches.“
Meanwhile, Western Union is a global leader in cross-border money transfers while Airtel Africa, on its part, is a leading telecom carrier with presence in over 14 countries including Nigeria.
Airtel Africa is a Company primarily listed on the London Stock Exchange (LSE), and completed its secondary listing on the NSE in July 2019.
