A former Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olusola Amore, has advised that the military should not be deployed for the governorship election in Ondo State.

He stated that the non-involvement of the military is to ensure a credible election.

Amore, in an interview with Insidebusiness.ng on Wednesday, also said the involvement of the military for the election is unnecessary and could be counter-productive.

According to him, there should be enough police personnel for the exercise as it is not a general election,

He said, “I will not support the idea of using the military for election. If we want to have credible elections, the military should not even be at sight.

“Since it is not a general election, there should be enough police personnel that will do both patrol and election duty. We have counterterrorism and all those other squads to deal with violent situations.”

It will be recalled that the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, said that a total of 33,783 police personnel comprising 30,933 conventional police personnel and 2,850 special agents would be deployed for the election.

He added that there will also be additional 3,500 manpower from other security agencies to complete the police.

The incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress; the candidate of the Peoples DemocraticParty, Eyitayo Jegede, and the flag bearer of the Zenith Labour Party, Agboola Ajayi, are the main contenders in the election.
