Chief Operating Officer in Manufacturing

Job Description 

Chief operating officers, or COOs, work directly beneath the chief executive officer in the hierarchy of a manufacturing business. COOs deal with the day-to-day details of each department in the company, such as production and human resources. He acts as a liaison between department level managers and the top executive.

Responsibilities:

  • Chief operating officers are responsible for the management of all departments in the organization

  • The COO must be knowledgeable in the manufacturing operations and the needs and capabilities of each department.

  • Chief operating officers are responsible for overseeing human resources, sales and other administrative departments in the company.

Duties:

  • Chief operating officer prepares reports for the CEO on the day-to-day activities in each department.

  • The reports evaluate the performance of each department in a company, including whether they met production goals and budgets.

  • The COO and CEO work together to develop strategies for each department’s success.

  • Chief operating officers allocate the resources department managers’ need, such as funds, labor and equipment, to ensure they meet their goals.

  • COOs conduct regular meetings with department managers to remain up to date on the status of each area of the company.

  • They develop and implement department budgets.

 

Requirements:

  • A chief operating officer position usually requires a master’s degree in business.

  • Degree programs include coursework in management, leadership, finance and accounting.

  • COO candidates must have experience in the manufacturing industry. For example, electronics manufacturers may prefer that applicants have experience in electronics or manufacturing processes.

  • COOs have experience and training in a management technique such as lean manufacturing or Total Quality Management.

 

Skills:

  • Chief operating officers must be strong leaders with the ability to manage upper management employees and provide direction for workers at all levels.

  • The position also requires strong decision-making and problem solving skills

  • Time management skills to monitor and evaluate the performance of multiple departments
