Amid concerns and controversies over the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine’s side effect, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum has joined other world bodies and health organisations to assure of its safety.

The NGF said its members backed the continued use of the vaccine and are committed to continuously encourage its use by all eligible Nigerians.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its 28th Emergency Teleconference Meeting, the NGF Chairman and Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, said no side effects had been reported by those vaccinated so far, and urged Nigerians to remain calm and report any adverse reaction following vaccination.

He said the forum was advised by the COVID-19 Technical Advisory Group, led by a renowned virologist, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, that Nigeria should continue to vaccinate those eligible with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Fayemi said the CTAG advice was in line with the latest recommendations by the World Health Organisation.

According to the communiqué, “We, members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), at our meeting held today, deliberated on issues affecting the country, particularly on the roll-out of the Covid19 vaccines and the attendant issues that have arisen since the rollout.

“The chairman congratulated his colleagues for accepting to be vaccinated and declared that so far, the vaccines have not shown any signs of side-effects as is widely rumoured.”
