Okonjo-Iweala Announces Appointment Of Four WTO Deputy DGs
The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has announced the appointment of four new Deputy Director-Generals to assist her in steering the ship at the international trade organization.
According to a statement on Tuesday, the WTO announced the appointed Deputy DGs as Angela Ellard of the United States, Anabel González of Costa Rica, Ambassador Jean-Marie Paugam of France and Ambassador Xiangchen Zhang of China.
Okonjo-Iweala, a former Finance minister under ex- presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan became the first woman and African to lead the trade bloc when she formally took office in March 2021.
Speaking on the appointment, Okonjo-Iweala said, “I am very pleased to announce the appointment of four new Deputy Directors-General at the WTO. It is the first time in the history of our Organization that half of the DDGs are women.”
According to her, the appointment underscores her commitment to strengthen the WTO.
” This underscores my commitment to strengthening our Organization with talented leaders whilst at the same time achieving gender balance in senior positions. I look forward to welcoming them to the WTO,” she said.
