Food Most Expensive In Kwara, Kogi, Rivers In June – NBS
The trio of Kwara, Kogi and Rivers are states where food items are most expensive on yearly basis according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Prices of food items have hit the roof across the nation but the statistics agency noted that the price of food items in Kwara is as high as 25.62 per cent, and it is trailed by Kogi state at 24.81 per cent. It is 24.34 per cent in Rivers state.
This is one of the factors that triggered the high food index which together with others, pushed inflation to 18.6 per cent in the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) which says the figure is the highest since February 2017.
According to the Bureau, food inflation increased to 20.60 per cent in June 2022 on a year-on-year basis while the rate of changes in average price level declined by 1.23 per cent when compared to 21.83 per cent in June 2021.
“In June 2022, the inflation rate increased to 18.60 per cent on a year-on-year basis. This is 0.84 per cent points higher compared to the rate recorded in June 2021, which is 17.75 per cent. This means that the headline inflation rate increased in the month of June 2022 when compared to the same month in the previous year (i.e., June 2021). Increases were recorded in all COICOP divisions that yielded the Headline index,” the NBS stated.
However, according to the state-by-state analysis, the NBS noted that Kwara, Kogi and Rivers recorded the highest food price increase year-on-year.
The statistics office revealed that Jigawa at (16.01 per cent ), Sokoto with (16.24 per cent) and Kaduna at (17.75) were the states with the least food price on a yearly basis.
“In June 2022, food inflation on a year-on-year basis was highest in Kwara (25.62 per cent), Kogi (24.81 per cent), and River (24.34 per cent), while Jigawa (16.01 per cent ), Sokoto (16.24 per cent) and Kaduna (17.75 per cent) recorded the slowest rise in year-on-year food inflation,” NBS said.
“On a month-on-month basis, however, in June 2022 food inflation was highest in Ebonyi (3.52 per cent), Bayelsa (3.27 per cent), and Ondo (3.25 per cent ), while Sokoto (0.11 per cent ), Taraba (0.94 per cent) and Adamawa (1.22 per cent ) recorded the slowest rise on month-on-month inflation,” it added.
On all classification items, the Bureau noted that Bauchi, Kogi and Ebonyi states recorded the highest figures yearly, conversely, Adamawa, Sokoto and Jigawa states churned out the least figures under the same period.
“In June 2022, all items inflation on a year-on-year basis was highest in Bauchi (21.99 per cent), Kogi (21.37 per cent), Ebonyi (20.73 per cent) while Adamawa (16.14 per cent), Sokoto (16.31 per cent ) and Jigawa (16.37 per cent) recorded the slowest rise in headline Year-on-Year inflation.
“On a month-on-month basis, however, June 2022, recorded the highest increases in Kogi (2.69 per cent), Ondo (2.65 per cent), and Kaduna (2.61 per cent), while Adamawa (-0.26 per cent), Abuja (-.0.03 per cent) and Sokoto (0.79 per cent) recorded the slowest rise on month-on-month inflation.”
