Labour Unions Suspend Strike, Meet FG June 19

The Federal Government, together with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday agreed to suspend the strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

The strike is suspended to allow for closure on some demands of the labour unions after which all the parties will reconvene for another meeting on June 19 to consider the various demands.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, who read the resolution after a meeting that stretched for hours, said the parties also agreed to set up a joint committee to review the proposal for any wage increase or award and establish a framework and timeline for implementation.

The details of the resolutions state that the federal government, the TUC and the NLC are to establish a joint committee to review the proposal for wage increase or award and establish a framework and timeline for implementation.

Also, the Federal Government, together with the TUC and the NLC is to review the World Bank Financed Cash transfer scheme and propose the inclusion of low-income earners in the program.

In addition, the Federal Government, the TUC, and the NLC are to revive the CNG conversion program earlier agreed with Labor centers in 2021 and work out detailed implementation and timing.

The Labour centers and the Federal Government are also to review issues hindering effective delivery in the education sector and propose solutions for implementation.

Also as part of the resolutions, the Labour centers and the Federal Government are to review and establish the framework for the completion of the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries while the federal government is to provide a framework for the maintenance of roads and expansion of rail networks across the country.

The meeting also resolved that all other demands submitted by the TUC to the Federal Government will be assessed by the joint committee

Consequently, the parties agreed that the NLC must suspend the notice of strike forthwith to enable further consultations while both the TUC and the NLC are to continue the ongoing engagements with the federal government and secure closure on the resolutions above

The parties also agreed that the Labour Centers and the Federal Government meet on June 19, 2023, to agree on an implementation framework.
