A pro-democracy and advocacy group for good governance located in Ogun state, Good Governance Watch (GGW) has condemned the brazen attack on the campaign posters and billboards of the gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka by the Ogun State Signage and Advertisements Agency (OGSAA), saying that the attack was an affront on the inalienable rights of the party and its candidate to stage a peaceful, free, fair campaigns in Ogun state.

In a press statement released in Abeokuta the state capital and signed by its State Coordinator Dr Femi Adewale, the group condemned the manner in which the agency, ostensibly acting on the orders of the state governor went about destroying posters and carting away the boards of the ADC gubernatorial candidate.

He said: “We join other citizens of Ogun state to condemn this brazen attack on the inalienable rights of the people of Ogun people to peaceful, free and fair campaigns. We are in a democracy and by INEC law, all bans on campaigns have been lifted from December 1st 2018; for governorship campaigns, when all political parties are free to go about seeking for votes and do their public adverts; without intimidation and harrrassment.

Continuing, “Even if the ADC team have not fully complied with the demands of the signage agency, it ought to invite them for regularization and effect of possible payments if applicable. We then wonder why the agency will go about such sadistic act without pursuing first the option of least resistance”.

We denounce it in strongest possible terms and warn the perpetrators of the grave danger such actions pose to the survival of our democracy; if for example the other party decide to retaliate”.

Adewale also drew the attention of the people to the fact that what is happening in Ogun State is a foretaste of what the APC-led Government plans to unleash in the gateway state in their desperate attempt to confer undue advantage to itself in the 2019 general elections and retain or return to power having performed woefully and lost the support of the generality of Ogun people.

“Ogun state cannot become a theater of war and the government should allow a level playing field for all candidates and allow the people to freely choose their representatives for various positions”; he remarked.

According to the GGW Coordinator, “In the face of these challenges therefore, our group hereby call on the people of Ogun State to be prepared to fight and defend their right to democratically elect their leaders in the 2019 elections. The incidence is furtherance of the deliberate plan to intimidate the people of Ogun State in order to facilitate the actualization of the nocturnal intentions of the enemies of democracy”.

The group however hinted that it will keep its eyes and hears on ground all through the campaign period to see that a better democratic culture is imbibed.
